How much does it cost to charge at home? The 10-second version

Ten seconds: your car, your rate, your answer. Then put in your own miles with the calculator.

Your car. Your rate. Your answer.

Open the calculator: How much does it cost to charge an electric car?

What the video shows

A driver walks into the garage, picks up the cable from the wall charger and plugs the car in. Then he checks his phone. The point is that the cost of charging at home is not a mystery number: it is the energy the car uses times the rate on your own electricity bill.

Do it for your car

Find your car's figure in kWh per 100 miles on its window sticker, or pick one of the five cars listed in the calculator. Type the miles you want to put back and, if you like, your rate per kWh from your bill. The calculator gives the energy, the time on a 120-volt outlet or a 240-volt charger, and the cost at your rate, worked out in your browser.

Before you charge at home

  • Use the night rate if your plan has one and you charge overnight.
  • A 240-volt circuit is wiring work for a licensed electrician.
  • Keep the cord off walkways and away from water.
