How much concrete do I need? The 10-second version

Ten seconds: length, width, thickness, done. Then work out your own slab with the calculator.

Length. Width. Thickness. Done.

Open the calculator: How much concrete do I need?

What the video shows

Someone kneels by an empty wooden form with a tape measure, then the concrete goes in and gets smoothed with a hand float. A slab is a box: its volume is length times width times thickness, and that volume is what you buy, by the bag or by the cubic yard.

Do it for your slab

Type the length and width in feet and the thickness in inches, or switch to post holes and give their diameter, depth and number. The calculator adds about ten percent for waste and an uneven base, then gives cubic yards and the number of 40, 60 or 80 pound bags. Type your price per bag or per yard only if you want the cost.

Before you pour

  • Patios and walkways are usually four inches thick.
  • Check local rules for frost depth and permits before you dig footings.
  • Wear gloves and eye protection when you mix.
