How much mulch do I need? The 10-second version
Ten seconds: measure the bed, pick the depth, get the yards. Then try your own bed with the calculator.
Open the calculator: How much mulch, soil or gravel do I need?
What the video shows
A gardener looks at an empty raised bed, measures it, and fills it from a wheelbarrow of wood chips. Mulch, soil and gravel are all sold by volume, so the only two numbers that matter are the area of the bed and how deep you want the layer.
Do it for your garden
Measure the length and width of the bed in feet, or type the area if you know it. Pick the depth in inches: about three inches of coarse mulch around trees and shrubs, more topsoil for a new lawn, at least two inches of gravel for a path. The calculator gives cubic yards for a bulk delivery and the number of 2 or 3 cubic foot bags.
Before you spread
- Weed the bed first.
- Keep mulch pulled back from tree trunks.
- Read the real volume on the bag label and type it.
- Round up to the next bag: a little extra fills the low spots.
