HowMuchIt / Ice for a party
How much ice do I need for a party?
One to two pounds per guest for the glasses, double that outdoors, plus the ice that keeps the drinks cold in coolers: that last part is the one people forget. The calculator adds both and counts the bags.

Work out your ice
| Use | Ice |
|---|---|
| In the glasses | 1 to 2 lb per guest |
| Outdoors or hot | double it |
| In a cooler | twice as much ice as contents |
| Bags | commonly 10 lb |
Two jobs for the ice
Ice in the glasses and ice in the coolers are two separate amounts. For the glasses, plan 1 to 2 pounds per guest, and double it for an outdoor party or a hot day. For the coolers, pack about twice as much ice as the drinks inside, by weight. Cubed ice chills drinks faster; a block melts more slowly and keeps a cooler cold longer.
Make it last
Keep the coolers in the shade, and chill them before the party so the ice goes to the drinks, not to the plastic. To chill bottles and cans fast, use a tub of ice and water with some salt, not ice alone.
